What does the discussion forum on drafting reveal to you about the ways in which different people approach drafting? Why are these differences important? When reading my fellow peer's answers on drafting, it seems to me that they have better understanding of drafting than I do. Most of the time, the answers are different depending on the people who types them. It reveals that the word " drafting" somewhat has the same meaning or definition, but is worded differently based on different peoples' understanding of the word.
These differences are important because you get the understand of what others think and how they understand the topic at hand. There were some answers that were like text book definition while others were simple and understanding. Most I understand more when I read my peer's review of the question and actually get an inside look on what they are talking about.

Describe a time when you encountered a new cultural experience, i.e. eating a new food for the first time, participating in a different holiday celebration, learning a new way to greet someone, etc.
It was back when I was 14 years old, that I learned a new way to greet someone in German. It was summer vacation for my mom and me. We took a trip to the Philippines to visit my extended family which comprised of my grandparents, my cousins, uncles, and aunts. One day, one of my Uncles suggested we stay two nights at a local beach just a few hours away from Banga, South Cotabato. We took our swimsuits and extra clothes and supplies to spend few days the beach. I remember there at arriving there, there were cottages, people cleaning up coconut debris to keep the place cleaning, people selling their wares to tourists. I also remember seeing this family that was there on vacation and they were friendly to us. One day they were trying to speak in Ilonggo (a dialect in the Mindanao the second largest island in the Philippines) with a heavy German accent to my uncle. So my uncle taught they how to be fluent in Ilonggo and Tagalog (which is the national language of the Philippines). In return the family taught us how to do a greeting in German which was nice for us to understand a different language. In the end of it all, some how we understand each other and how there was a language barrier between German and Tagalog was hard. I think what made it easy was that the family had a translator that understand Tagalog and Illonggo. Another time was when I first tried Greek Food for the the first time. It was somewhere when I was back in high school around the time I was a sophomore. There was a new restaurant that had opened in Harker Heights plaza area near Wal-Mart. So my mother told me about the Greek restaurant" Acropolis" that had replaced this burger joint . We decide it was the spot for lunch and to try new food. When it was her day off, we went there for lunch and as she open the door there was a blast of Greek Music playing and can see people in the kitchen preparing food . As we sat at our table and looked at the menu, I did not know what to order because there were so many things to try out. I decide on the most basic food item on the menu that I knew about and that was a gyro plate. My mother order this thing call moussaka even thought it sounds weird and all but it was meat with potato and eggplant patty style with sauce. When we got our food, the gyro plate consist of shredded meat with potatoes and this sauce that had cucumber in it. When I tasted my food, it was I think a burst of spices and meat mixed with the sauce. I can not explained what I had just tasted because I can not describe the taste and the flavor. In the end Acropolis became one of my favorite restaurants to go for lunch and for dinner. How does your outward appearance (i.e. clothing, makeup, hairstyle, accessories, etc.) reflect your cultural identity?
My outward appearance does not reflect my cultural identity because I wear ordinary clothes like a t-shirt and some jeans. It means that I have no sense of reflecting my cultural identity on what clothes I wear. Everything else like accessories and hairstyles does not reflect my cultural identity. I do not see an answer on why I should have my outward appearance reflect my cultural identity. How do your behaviors and practices (i.e. rituals, daily activities, routines, habits, etc.) reflect your cultural identity? My behaviors or practice does reflect my cultural identity because I do How do your beliefs and values (i.e. opinions, commitments, memberships, principles, etc.) reflect your cultural identity? How my beliefs and values reflect my cultural identity is a good question because since my entire family is basically Filipino means that my family follows old traditions like respecting an elder, saying grace on the table during eating time whether it is dinner or breakfast. It does not matter what I do because being raise in a family that is full of hard workers means that I have to be successful in life it does not mean I can be rich but have to be able to get a job that is good pay and to be able to have a house in the future. How do your dietary and domestic practices (i.e. hygienic routines, meals and mealtimes, food choices, daily chores) reflect your cultural identity? My dietary and domestic practices do not reflect my cultural identity even others say otherwise because I share my daily chores with my mother to keep the house in function and that when it come to meal time it is usually me who says a prayer. Most times I find my self not belonging in a group because I do not follow a culture or a group that people think I should belong in. How does your region or location in the world reflect your cultural identity? My region or location in the world does not reflect my cultural identity because since I am in Texas. I am immersed by a melting pot of people from around the world here in Killeen,Texas. Most times I feel like the odd one out because I do not belong in a group that I would call my own. Describe a time when you were judged, excluded, or misunderstood because of one of the cultural traits noted above. I do not remember a time where I was judged, excluded or misunderstood because I usually blend in with the crowd and most people see me as this friendly person that is approachable and very nice.
It is revealed that there are many ways for coming up with an idea for starters. To be honest about it, a conversation, reading a book, writing a list of your thoughts and so on can help you come up with an idea. For me, coming up with an idea is to draw and sketch my idea out. I like to see my ideas visually and draw them before I would forget that idea.
My peers' contributions on the discussion forum has revealed different ways of coming up with an idea. Their contribution on the the topic" How I generate ideas" has many different answers according to one's opinion on their own idea. It is really hard to come up with a different answer than your peers, because you will never know who is thinking of what to say and who has the same idea as you. For example, one of my fellow students suggest a writer program to help come up with ideas on the computer and others came up with making a list or have an intelligent conversation with someone just to generate an idea. The role of writing in my life is I think important because writing can get anywhere in life. My relationship with writing is not the easiest because I feel like none of my thoughts are flowing though and that most of the time I do not read what I write, that is the biggest issue in my writing. Another problem in my writing is miss spelling simple words or words that I should know but cannot spell them. Whenever I have those problems, I solve them by looking at a dictionary or look them up online even though online gives you different definitions from different sites.
I can describes my past experiences in writing overall a tough one. It is actually due to moving to different schools and learn different styles of writing until high school where I just learn only two different ones which made it easier for me to choose. So I choose one and in a way it kind of prepared me for this course. I hope in the future, I can write better and create short stories. " How can I achieve those goals?", is a good question, it actually takes practice in writing until you can can get better in it, like the the saying,"Practice makes Perfect". I hope to gain experience in writing and develop my writing skills from this course and my peers. The downside of this course is that most of my peers have some sort of degree or that they have a higher knowledge in English than me. My expectations for myself is to get better in this course and that I can actually figure something out for my future. For the other members of the the course is that they can pass with me on this course and help each other out on this course. In high school It is hard to describe the word " rhetoric" because the word itself has many different definitions. I would describe rhetoric as simple that it is art of persuasive speaking and writing. The definition of "rhetorical situation" is the context of a rhetorical act, that is the basic definition given by grammer.about.com. I do see awareness of this concept affecting my writing and behaviors, because it gives a response to the intended audience and it gives the writer time to think of who is his or hers audience, what is the writer's purpose, and what questions is the text addressing.
There was one writing experience, I had to use rhetoric to effectively convey a message to my high school speech class. The purpose of the message was about green energy and why it would be good for the world. The audience was my peers in high school which consist people from ninth through twelfth grade. I used simple word to talk to my peers because most of speech was about green energy and I actually had to water it down for those who do not understand. There is only one way for me to see my understanding of rhetoric and rhetorical situation affecting my future writing projects because that one way is going online and reading both definitions and looking at examples just I can get an idea where to start. In the WPA Outcome Statement, it state" Rhetorical Knowledge is the basis of composing". It means that the writer needs to know what kind of audience they are addressing, what is the message, and the responds to variety of situations. The notion of writing collaboratively challenges my sense of what a writer is and does, because it is a group of people with each individual style of writing trying to put different ideas done and most of the time in the group there is the person who is practically the one who do most of the work, while the other two does some of the work, based on experience. I find collaborating a bit exciting because you can learn some thing a thing or two from the people you are collaborating with. Sometimes I find it intimidating, because there is this fear that people may judge you base on what you write or it would be something else.
I think that there would be some thing to learn or to gain from collaborating with other writers. In a sense you can learn to give people feedback and learn from other writer's perspectives. I think that the WPA Outcomes value the “collaborative and social aspects of the writing process" importantly because it gives the writer a sense to work in a group and an a opportunity to learn from other writer's perspectives. It means that collaboration with other writers which determines what person gets what task, role, and collaboration space so that they can all work together. Reflecting on a complete piece of writing would gain the writer the understand on why they are making these decisions on writing. It would help me understand why my writing process is the way that it is and it help me think on what I am writing about. The reflective writing differ from other writings because it is basically your thoughts on paper and what you have experience in that subject on which you are reflecting on. Some of the ways I would reflect on this writing is to do a self narrative like in first person in my head before I type it all done, other time it is easier for myself to write my thoughts down on paper.
I would do this reflection at home, because it is quiet and peaceful so that I can gather my thoughts." How would I do it?", is the question, because it takes a lot of thought into writing and that it make the person reflect on their thoughts. There is one WPA Outcome that reflective writing can relate to like Rhetorical Knowledge, because it give the student time to think and use key concepts analyzing and composing different text. One learns to write when they are in school. They start at the very basics of writing till they can write a paragraph. One thing about learning the process of writing is brain storming your ideas like drawing a picture in your mind. Another is prewriting which is actually the first stage in the learning process because it actually gets all of our ideas together on paper. Then comes in the drafting because there are mistakes in the draft that might need improvement. Next would be revising because it gives the writer time to improve the draft and making sure that the sentences flow together. Then the editing stage where the writer is making sure there are no errors in the revision paper. Lastly, the publishing stage, where the writer has the final report and it would be critique by many.
My understand of the "learning process" of writing is different, because I have been taught many different ways how to write and how to make an essay in the format like the acronym APE or MLA. My peers may have been taught differently than what I was taught in school. So our understand of writing will have many different definitions based on that person's opinions and what they understand. The outcomes are a little surprising because I have a hard time in this subject which is English. It is the subject that I need help in. As a post-graduate in high school, I see that there are lot stuff that I have to learn. My writing skills are poor, because most of the time I would write from high-school standards, but my grammar is poor and my choice of words are simple. Those outcomes seem confusing to me because in high school, they sort of prepare you for college, but they do prepare the students for the outside world, like getting a job or how to save money. The courses outcomes are different and actually hard than the high school standards that I am used to. I understand outcome number three, because it is understand the writing process and that it is one of the goals of English 101 Class. As I take this course, I hope that it would teach me how to write better and understand better.
